Ok-lee-homa
I'll be out of the studio and away from email until July 7. Fear not, I'll be back with LOTS of photos. Have a happy and safe Fourth of July!

A Tale of Tunnels and Daisy Chains
After a solid two weeks of being glued to a seat in front of a computer, I came down with a pretty serious case of I got to get the hell out of heres. So with very little notice we decided to pack up the car and head out for an adventure of some sort. Wooed by clam strips and hot tubs, we headed toward the beach.

For those of you that may not know, the funny part about going to the beach is how very little time you actually spend on the beach. I always go with high hopes of colorful kites and sand castles, but every single time I am met with -12 degree gales and sandstorms that do horrendous things to my cameras. To put it in geek terms, think less Golden Girls and more Goonies. (Which leads me on the thought tangent that those ladies never went walking around the beach either.)

We got a fun little cabin surrounded by the Redwoods that just so happened to have a delightful daisy patch right outside the front door. So of course, we had to stop for a bit of stick hunting and necklace making.

My little guy has an almost compulsive habit of picking all the flowers he sees and bringing them to me. It's pretty awesome.

After a bit of forest exploring, I come up with the bright idea that we just had to walk down to the beach for just a little bit.

We noticed this little sign that alluded to a shortcut to the beach. We all agreed that shortcuts are super and tunnels are fun.

This particular tunnel was far from fun.

I don't really know what I was expecting the tunnel to be. A tunnel, sure, but I didn't quite envision it looking so dark and rape-tastic. And is a giant drainpipe really the same as a tunnel?

Webster's says that yes, they indeed can be one in the same.
Main Entry:
1tun·nel
Pronunciation:
\ˈtə-nəl\
Function:
noun
Etymology:
Middle English tonel cask, tun, from Anglo-French, from tone tun
Date:
1508
1: a hollow conduit or recess : tube, well
2 a: a covered passageway; specifically : a horizontal passageway through or under an obstruction b: a subterranean gallery (as in a mine) c: burrow
— tun·nel·like \-nəl-ˌ(l)īk\ adjective

In case my writing skills haven't conveyed it enough, let me once again stress that I DID NOT WANT TO GO INTO THAT TUNNEL. But I also didn't want to be a spoilsport and call it all off. So I bit my tongue and thanked my lucky stars that I'm the kind of hip chick that always carries a book light with her.

This is Brian midway through. Sort of reminds me of the cover of a Young Adult novel.

As you probably guessed, we did make it out in one piece. I think it took around 15 minutes, which goes by much slower in tunnel time. Our light at the end of the tunnel consisted of a near lake that we had to wade through to get to a set of rickety stairs which THEN led us to a freezing beach where the dog whimpered, the boy screamed, and I bitched about sand blowing into my camera crevices.

Once we were back amongst the trees, all was well, not to mention delicious clam strips were in sight.
