Bu-Bu-Bu Birthday
In middle school I had this doll of an English teacher named Mrs. Lewis. Every year when her birthday would roll around she told everyone that she was 29. I remember thinking then, at the ripe old age of 13, that 29 must be the magic age that everyone wanted to be.

Needless to say that with all of the buildup that has come along with being 29 I was determined to have a fun "last of the 20s" shindig. So, I declared Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to be Birthday Weekend. Which, to be honest with you, was really just code for "I'm going to do whatever I want for three days."

Every year, the husband gets me a tacky cake from Albertson's and has them put something bizarre on it, partially to make me laugh but mostly I think he just likes to freak out the cake decorators. This year was my favorite!

I think this shot might be able to win the World's Creepiest Cake award.

As trite and borderline tacky as it might be, I've always had a deep-seated affinity for red roses and red spumante. I would have been considered quite stylish and sophisticated in the early 60s.

When I was a kid I always wanted those magic relighting candles for my birthday. This year I got them. I hate to say it, but I'm afraid that they are much like pixies in that they are much more annoying than magical. The timeline of this series is about two minutes of blowing them out, and them coming back...WAY more times than I would have expected. I think in the last picture I'm saying, "Seriously?"

Brendan didn't much care for the fire portion of the cake but was happy to dip his fingers in the icing after we threw all of the candles into a bowl of water.

I got these great saucepans that I had been telling Brian about since Christmas. I really love how they have that bell jar shape. For the last year or so, I've been struggling with whether or not I wanted copper or stainless steel. When I saw these, my decision was made because they are a bit of both. And look! They are so shiny you can see my reflection while taking the picture.

I was pretty spoiled this year. I think this is probably what comes from getting your husband a Macbook for his birthday. I love karma.

Behold! A 1935 Agfa Ansco Plenax PB20! It is in such great condition. I really can't believe that he found one this cool.

It makes me sooooo happy...

We finished the weekend with a glass of what I think is hands down the best wine I've ever had. What's even better is that I still have half a bottle in the fridge!

Always With the Silver Lining
I suppose that I should have guessed that I would come down with whatever virus it was that Bren had. I decided this time to not complain and let being sick work for me. It was actually quite nice. I got to catch up on some knitting, rediscover the wonder that is earl grey, and sleep. Looking back on it, it was a pretty nice vacation.

Oh, My Poor, Neglected Blog
It has been a rather long week for us despite the fact that it is only Thursday...I've had my first experience in caring for a super sick kid. I really should count myself lucky that he's made it to nearly two years without having to deal with anything worse than a cold because these high fevers are kind of scary. After four days of it I really wouldn't wish it on anyone. However, it looks like the worst has come and gone, and thanks to Benadryl I'm getting a bit of a nice respite. These charming little January berries have been beckoning me from my office window to come and take pictures of them.

A little bit of nature, headphones, and a a lovely new cd can make any day better.

Do The Whirlwind
Whew. We're back home and starting to catch up with everything. I've got tons to blog about, including a rather stressful incident with a spider I just had a few moments ago. Until then, you should check out one of my fave websites, Etsy. It's a huge marketplace for crafters' to buy and sell the stuff they make. I have to say, that I've been wasting quite a bit of time there today, so hey, you should too!
