Welcome
Thanks so much for stopping by! I'm Megan Boone, a lifestyle photographer from Southern Oregon. This blog was designed to be a sneak peek into both my professional and personal life. If you are a client I hope that it will give you an understanding of my business philosophies as well as my personality and style of work. If you are a family member or friend it will just be a good way to check in on our daily adventures. My goal is to keep things interesting so aside from my photography, you can expect to find everything from recipes that I'm loving, books and music to check out, to anecdotes about weird looking bugs that I find in my bathtub. So please take the time to utilize your bookmark function, or you can subscribe to the RSS feed at the bottom, if that is the sort of thing floats your boat. If neither of those options made sense to you, then you need to pull out a piece of paper and write down meganboonephotography.net with a pen, then stick the note to your computer screen for safekeeping. In the meantime enjoy the rest of the blog.

Vicarious
I don't know who this is but I'd sure like to be friends with her. Or at the very least steal her shoes and bike for the afternoon.

Wes Works!
Does he though? My friend Wes has had his website under construction for far too long.

Perhaps this picture will light the fire...

London Calling
If there is only one steadfast rule in party throwing it is this: You must MUST have a theme. I dare anyone to prove me wrong on this. I mean, think about the year that your own birthday parties started to take a turn towards blahsville. Around 12-years-old, right? You might have just blamed it on the pre-pubescent tendency to be too cool for everything, including your own birthday. Oh, how you were wrong, though. I guarantee it is only because that was the first year you told your mom that you were much too old to have He-man plates and matching napkins.

When the husband asked if we could do fish & chips for his birthday dinner, the plan was set into motion.

I was really surprised at just how easy it was to amass so much British stuff in so little time...

Authentic beans from White's Country Farm and cheese from Market of Choice.

I learned that British food isn't terribly photogenic. Considering that I hail from the land of BBQ and mushy pies, this fact doesn't deter me from knowing that just because it doesn't look pretty doesn't mean that it is any less delicious.

This was my first go at beans and toast. It won't be my last. These people know how to do breakfast.

No British party is complete without a new birthday Joy Division shirt.

The remnants of an "Anarchy in the UK" scavenger hunt.

Now, before you think that we ate all of the food that I'm posting within a two-hour time slot, I'd like to acknowledge that this was an all-day event.

Welsh Rarebit ( snagged this recipe off of Jaime Oliver's forum, but it wasn't his)

INGREDIENTS

20g butter
1 cup grated chedder cheese
1 teaspoon mustard powder
dash of Worcestershire sauce
¼ cup of beer (Newcastle, of course)

METHOD

4 thick slices of sourdough bread or a crusty loaf of your choice, toasted. I used Tuscan Loaf; I think sourdough is just to sour for this...

Melt the butter in a small saucepan. Add cheese, mustard powder, Worcestershire sauce, and beer. Stir until smooth.

Spread over the toast and grill until bubbling if desired.

Best Rarebit recipe that I've tried yet!

I'm Oklahoma wedding-bound and off to pack, so I won't get around to telling you about the best fish & chips known to man. For now, it will stay a secret. Sah-ee.

Cherries
With just portrait work to do last weekend we were able to have our first relaxing Sunday of the summer. What better way to spend one of those than with some canning?

I found a recipe for amaretto cherries a few weeks before and had been fantasizing about them obsessively.

The only issue that I ran into is that my cherries got pretty floaty. I don't know what the remedy is for that-perhaps maybe just packing them in tighter?

It has actually been a few weeks since we made these-I heard that waiting a bit made them more intense. And seriously, life doesn't get ANY better than when you can come home to a jar of liquored up cherries after a hard day. Forget those pesky forks or accompaniments like ice cream and pound cake. All you need are fingers and greed.

No, Not THAT Megan Boone
So, there is this actress named Megan Boone that I was made aware of long ago when I was trying to secure meganboone.com as a domain. I think that got us off to a bad start - I mean, not only did she get to my name first, but she also snatched my preferred site address. I have since come to forgive and more realistically, forget her. Until a few months ago when she landed a supporting role in a slightly popular movie.

Since then, her website has gone defunct (at least last I checked) and therefore all of her creepy fan mail is coming to me. Maybe creepy is a bit of a harsh verb to use, BUT it is weird. My original plan was to post snippets of a few, but after further consideration I'm thinking that I don't want antagonize any of the authors.

Seeing that this is my first batch of fan mail to ever get, I've learned some surprising things about it. Namely, that for fan mail, it sure is massively self-centered. I mean, WOW, these people go on and on about themselves - their vocations, locations, mother's fibromyalgia. Only rarely, do they drop in a few kind words about my acting skills and beauty. What is even more rare is when they comment about how wonderful it is that such a beautiful woman could take such beautiful pictures. Even though these statements are completely skewed, they are still nice to read. It still strikes me as weird, though, that people would think that an actress in Hollywood would moonlight as a wedding photographer in Oregon. Here is where I'll refrain from saying impolite things about other people's intelligence. I'd also like to add, just to be fair, that spell check caught that I didn't spell intelligence right; I'd like to hope that it was just a typo, but one can't always be sure.

Notes
Note to the ladies: Spray roses are 5 bucks at Safeway right now.

Note to the husband: Isn't the new white dining table coming in handy already?

Fondant Isn't Like Fimo
So, I harbor these constant fantasies of someday being a cool, calm, domestic goddess. For the most part, it is a good fantasy to have, as far as fantasies go. It keeps me out of trouble and allows me to live in a lane where things like mastering the perfect chicken korma recipe matter, as opposed to say, death or taxes.

Subsequently, these fantasies can lead to near break downs after nine hours of cake and party food making. The break down only happening because I realize things like, I am quite far from a domestic goddess, don't really like standing on my feet for an eternity in the kitchen and I'd really rather be listening to TOOL and taking pictures of flowers (attributes that are more like a teenager than a cool and calm thirty something).

Which brings me to THE cake. This cake was truly perfect in my mind. In fact I even stayed awake a few nights thinking about how awesome it was going to be and how fabulous of a person it would make me for even conceptualizing it. On hour 4.5, after running out of icing, and during the part where I was rolling out the little ropes, I realized that the idea of perfection was out the window and I simply did not care anymore. I thought the whole task would be much easier than it ended up proving itself to be. I can make pretty great things out of Fimo and after watching a few of those cake tournaments on the Food Network I assumed that fondant was similar in make-up. What they don't tell you is that you have to work pretty quick with it, which isn't so easy to do after you have sliced and placed over 50 little tiny squares.

My point is this: Making cakes is crazy hard, and if you are in the process of buying one for a wedding don't question the cost. Those people deserve it.

All in all, it was well received because three year olds just aren't the most critical judges in the world. "Rookie" sat atop the cake in all his glory and that is all that really mattered.

The Apology
So, I've been putting off this rather uncomfortable post. It is uncomfortable for two reasons. The first Is that I really find nothing more boring and downright annoying than reading peoples' blog posts that start with things like, "I've been soooo busy, sorry I haven't posted in a while." Honestly, why post that at all? Coming up with some sort of apology that won't bore you to tears isn't quite as hard as the act of just doing it. It is sort of like when you know that you have put off calling your grandma for way too long, and the idea of saying sorry doesn't seem hard so much as the knowing that you will just feel a bit crap while doing so. That, and no excuse is really good enough for not calling your grandma for two months.

But as far as excuses go, boy do I have them, and they are goooood excuses.

First of all, we've moved!

Okay, so maybe that is the only good excuse that I have. We were sick for a few days. Does that count? No? Well, then, moving is all I've got.

Having gotten the uncomfortable bit done with, I'll move on to good news. I am a firm believer that sorries always go better when you come armed with presents. So, I've decided to do a 30-day run of blog posts. Yes, every day, rain or shine, I will post something. I can't promise that they will all be even remotely interesting, but they'll happen. And if I renege...I'll give away a free photo shoot to the first person that comments after midnight.

This may not seem like a huge deal, but considering that wedding and portrait season is in full swing (not to mention house renovations and unpacking) it will be a challenge for me. I'm feeling up to it, however.

And to not leave you pictureless, I'll sign off with the most gorgeous blue eyes I've seen in quite some time.
